CSULB Economic Stabilization Act Panel Discussion

Housing prices are crashing. Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, and Washington Mutual, have been acquired for pennies on the dollars. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are under Federal Government conservatorship. U.S. Commercial banks have tightened lending standards, and a credit crunch threatens global financial markets. All of this stokes fears of an economic slowdown that many believe could result in a deep recession for the U.S. and the rest of the world.

The U.S. Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve Board developed a plan for a $700 billion bailout of Wall Street, and this bailout will be discussed by a panel of experts on the CSULB campus.

The panel will discuss what caused the crisis, what the bailout means, what the implications of the bailout are, and how Main Street, not just Wall Street, is affected.

Authors@Google: Gordon Bell & Jim Gemmell

Gordon Bell and Jim Gemmell visit Google’s Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss their book “Total Recall: How the E-Memory Revolution Will Change Everything.” This event took place on September 25, 2009, as part of the Authors@Google series.

In 1998, pioneering computer scientist Gordon Bell and his colleague Jim Gemmell at Microsoft began an experiment called MyLifeBits— an attempt to record Bells entire life digitally. Foreseeing the coming explosion of digital memory capacity and ubiquitous sensing devices, Bell set out to create a database of everything he did, saw, read, ate, felt—his whole life experience. He fused together a digital version of his past (scanned photos, letters, memorabilia, and so on) with a cuttingedge recording of his present, using sensor-enhanced cameras, GPS, and the latest in software technology. Fascination with this amazing undertaking has been ongoing, with features running everywhere from CBS to Scientific American, The New Yorker to Fast Company. But until now the full implications of what is really possible have not been revealed. Bells experiment is only a foretaste of an incredible new era in which memory will go far beyond the human senses and everything can be remembered. You will have total recall.

Total Recall outlines the transformation coming that will affect virtually every aspect of our lives. It describes the near-future with heart monitors woven into clothing, wearable cameras that take photographs constantly and monitors that know what you have eaten. It details the steps anyone can take now to lifelog and create a private, personal database. Welcome to life in the new era of total recall.

Gordon Bell is a computer engineer and manager. An early employee of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), Bell designed several of their PDP machines and later became Vice President of Engineering in 1972, overseeing the development of the VAX. Bell’s later career includes entrepreneur, investor, founding Assistant Director of NSF’s Computing and Information Science and Engineering Directorate, and researcher at Microsoft Research, 1995-present. He co-founded The Computer Museum in Boston, and was a founding board member of its successor, Mountain View’s own Computer History Museum.

Jim Gemmell is a senior researcher at Microsoft Research, currently working on the next generation of search. Previously, Jim’s research focus was MyLifeBits, part of the CARPE research community, whose first and second workshops he was proud to chair. Jim has also done research on the topics of personal media management/enhancement, telepresence, and reliable multicast. His research has led to features in Windows XP, Windows Server 2008, and Bing.com.

BMCC’s Department of Caring
November 18, 2009

Interview with Professor Jacqueline Nichols.

Jacqueline Nichols was working at Harlem Hospital as associate director of nursing in the mid-90s when she mentioned to a colleague—a BMCC nursing instructor who was running a program at the hospital—that shed been thinking about going into teaching.

The instructor suggested that I apply for a teaching position as soon as I had my Masters degree, Nichols recalls. Degree in hand, she was offered an adjunct position at BMCC, moving up to full-time faculty status in 1999. Today, she is chairperson of the colleges Department of Nursing and an ardent champion of nursing as a profession.

Mastering the basics
Our nursing program is open to students who meet specific academic qualifications, says Nichols, but because there are so many more applicants than openings, its highly competitive.

Once theyre in, students must first complete a pre-clinical course series covering such basic areas as English composition, math and science; only then do they move on to the clinical phase, which combines classroom work with observation and practice in actual healthcare facilities.

As part of their clinical curriculum, students hone diagnostic and treatment skills in the colleges new Human Patient Simulation lab, a computer-based facility. Graduates receive an Associate in Applied Science degree and are eligible to take the New York State licensing examination for Registered Nurse.

In addition to chairing the department, Nichols teaches the capstone course, Nursing Today and Tomorrow (Nursing 415), which focuses on the profession itself, apart from its clinical aspects, she says. The course covers the legal rights and responsibilities of nurses, current trends in education and employment, and even how to make yourself more marketable in what is a highly competitive professional environment.

While the nursing profession still offers ample opportunities, jobs arent as abundant as theyve been in the past, so we want the nurses we train to be as well prepared as possible to compete, Nichols says. In all our clinical courses, we constantly focus on maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, in terms of delivering care, staying focused on the patient and developing their skills.

Gaining hands-on experience
Nichols often suggests that students take continuing education courses in specific skills—IV certification, for example—to sharpen their competitive edge. In addition, internships at hospitals can provide valuable hands-on experience and prepare students for the transition to the workforce.

Nichols perspective on nursing is informed by more than 40 years professional experience, including 24 years as a reserve officer in the Army Nurse Corps. After graduating from Bronx Community College she worked as a staff nurse while pursuing her Bachelors degree. During that time, she worked in various nursing specialties, including geriatrics, surgery and maternal-child care, and also served as an administrator in several New York City hospitals.

Serving in the Army Reserve was extremely rewarding, Nichols says. It helped me advance in my profession and grow my skills. And, perhaps most important, it provided me with an opportunity to give back.
